#Twitter is Changing: Here are 3 Possible Scenarios

Social media sites can be complicated and confusing, but one thing we can count on them to do is change. When one social network like #twitter changes, it affects other social networks like it; this has happened again and again in the past few years. If you’re wondering how Twitter could change in the future, here are three possible scenarios. Which do you think will happen? And why? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Scenario 1: The End of Hashtags

When the new Twitter rolls out, hashtags will denote a group of tweets with a common theme. For example, if you wanted to organize your thoughts on #ElonMusk and #Change in one place, you could create a hashtag for this topic: #ElonMusk2020. This would give you a single feed of tweets about Elon Musk and his ideas for future change. However, this also means that there will no longer be an easy way to find what's trending or any sort of hashtag tracking with the new social media platform.

Scenario 2: Tweets as Status Updates

In this scenario, Twitter would shift more to a site that sends out status updates and links to content. As opposed to being a place where people go just to post 140-character tweets. It would be more like Facebook, where you can share updates and links with your friends. Tweets would have less of a purpose on the site if they were used primarily as status updates. The new version of Twitter might even have separate functions for photos or videos, instead of showing up in text form in the tweet stream.

Scenario 3: Twitter as a News Network

In this scenario, Twitter will be a place where you can go to find breaking news. The people that you follow will have more influence on what information you see that the people who tweet more frequently. You will be able to find different perspectives and opinions on any event. This scenario would make Twitter a very useful tool for journalists and law enforcement as well as the general public. It may also force journalists to provide more context in their tweets which could lead to a better understanding of what they are reporting. This scenario would strengthen Twitter's position as a news network while at the same time making it harder for advertisers because they would need to contend with a lot of other users that may not want to see their ads.
